Working from home is a brilliant idea –wearing pajamas to meetings, getting indulged in household chores which you have skipped for years now, keep snacking without being judged, spending time with your family and pet.

But as delightful working from home looks, it has got its own challenges. There are many distractions like your phone, bed, kids, pets, or even your favorite show that you want to binge-watch. All these lead to procrastination and low productivity.

This is where the importance of a home office lies. We found some easy hacks to make you more productive within the comfortable confines of your home.

The basics of Home office

Before we get down to home office ideas, first, let us focus on the basics that we need to keep in our minds while designing one.

1. Create a dedicated workstation

You can’t cook food anywhere apart from the kitchen counters. That’s where it becomes tasty. In the same way, you need an isolated space with at least a work desk and a chair as the bare minimum setup.

Having a home office workspace will signal your brain that this is a professional place explicitly meant to show results. Accessorizing it with necessary office tools will add seriousness and momentum to your working style.

Your computer (assuming it is the primary work tool) should be placed at the center of your work desk. It will serve as a visual reminder for your brain that you are at this desk for work. Apart from your system, make sure all your work-related items: notebook, pen, organizer, etc., are in your sight.

2.  Set a formal tone for your home office:

Your home office should look formal and inviting just like your office. This will ensure that your brain travels into work mode without getting confused.

3. Create a space that attracts you

Even though it is hard to WFH, your home office should be such that it keeps sending attractive work vibes. Use elements that you can relate with your office – the color, or some objects, anything that brings back office memories.

The next 5 important steps

1. Equipment

Speed and efficiency are critical at home. But make careful decisions. Question yourself whether you really need that large colour copier, or will a trip to the shop next door do? Do not pay for equipment you would not use daily.

Invest in a good internet connection for your home office so that you have the flexibility to work from your desk, chair, or a table at both standing and sitting heights. Isn’t it a simple solution to enhance your creative problem-solving and thinking ability?

2. Lighting

Good lighting is essential. Ideally, you need as much natural daylight as possible. Try having a work desk near a window to soak in your workday in maximum daylight. While working indoors, it will also enrich your body with an ample amount of vitamin D.

Not finding a place near the source of daylight?

No worries! You can illuminate your workstation with a combination of general and task lighting. Find daylight-replicating light sources to simulate the full-spectrum daylight.  To make your task lighting energy-efficient, select the ones that come equipped with control fixtures like dimmer switches to lessen or brighten the intensity.

3. Privacy

How about working in a noise-free area of your room? It’s always a good idea to transform it into your home office space. It will ensure focus and meeting deadlines on time. Also, it comes with the perk of getting free on time to spend a beautiful evening with your family.

For your calls and meetings, make sure to use headphones to pay attention. It will reduce errors and rework. If possible, you can use portable screens to shield the work area from ongoing activities. Divider walls offer a beautiful and attractive solution to create a boundary around your desk. You can decorate them with motivational books or professional art pieces for an inviting aura. Add a degree of white noise like the sound of a fan or the meditative clinking of a wind chime that will muffle other noises.

Now when you’re already experiencing work momentum, don’t forget to add a “No Disturbance” or “Quiet Please” signage on your workstation.

4. Layout & organization

The old rule, “a place for everything and everything in its place,” was coined to relieve stress. If you have carefully thought through your storage requirements, you’ll have the space you need.

Keeping your desk organized and tidy will go a long way in attracting you to it. You can get it customized with the shelves and drawers that meet your working style. Then segregating and arranging your office tools like pen, pencil, notepad, papers, clips, etc., will avoid chaos and a hectic schedule. Also, don’t let the wires get tangled and frustrate you during your working hours. Choose an office table that comes with pockets to keep them detangled.

5. Ergonomics

Even though you might be working from home, that doesn’t mean you can go causal with your health and safety. A full-day seating for your office must not take a toll on your spine or neck. Hence, give prominence to an ergonomic-friendly desk and chair to work stress-free comfortably. Also, don’t forget to choose sustainable furniture made from the finest wood to keep your indoors pleasant and healthy.
